For many years, the Willamette Agate and Mineral Society has offered the John and Lucille Sams Scholarship fund, which provides college scholarships to students whose field of study is in earth sciences and geology. The members of WAMS raise the funds for these scholarships through raffles at our meetings, an oral auction at the April Show and donations. Half of what we raise each year is allocated to current scholarships. The other half is added to our endowment fund, with the earnings used for scholarships. Through these activities, our club members hope to continue to provide funds for these scholarships now and in the future. Scholarship awards are typically a minimum of $500.
We have also provided funds for younger students to attend camps and other geology and earth science educational programs.
